Adam’s Story

Meet Adam, our June Dad of the Month! Adam and his partner Jestina were connected with Healthier Moms and Babies in late 2020. After finding out she was pregnant with their first child, Jestina enrolled in our Nurse Family Partnership home visitation program.

As young, first-time parents, Adam and Jestina said they were “nervous, but very excited, too.” Jestina began her home visits with her nurse home visitor, eager to learn how about baby’s development, what to expect during her pregnancy and beyond, and the choices they can make as a family to create a healthy future. While he worked hard at his job to provide for his growing family, Adam was also excited to participate and support Jestina throughout her journey. Adam listened to the education, participated in the crafts or learning activities, and was eager to contribute to the discussion. Their nurse home visitor said, “It was almost a given that Adam would answer the door holding the baby.”

In January of 2021, Atticus was born. As Adam was adjusting to being a new dad, he enrolled in our DadUp fatherhood initiative. He connected with our male engagement coordinator, texting or talking one-on-one, as Adam had questions. As Adam worked to adjust to his role as partner, provider, and parent, he leaned on the support and experience of other dads in the community and in the program.

Adam explained the most important thing he learned working with the male engagement coordinator is “community is key.” Adam explains, “being a first-time parent, everyone has to start from somewhere, but you’re not alone.” With the help and encouragement of Healthier Moms and Babies, Adam is confident asking for help and continues to connect with dads in the community. As Jestina continues to meet with her home visitor, Adam continues to participate, following the education and resources they received from Healthier Moms and Babies.

Adam has gone above and beyond to be a present and engaging father. To him, every milestone with Atticus is exciting; he says, “every day, I love it.” Jestina is excited for summer now that Atticus is walking, eager to make fun memories as a family.

We are proud of Adam and his fatherhood journey. We are excited to see their family shine!
